New Zealand based artist, Jane Kellahan creates thought-provoking,
emotive, atmospheric works. Animal rights and environmental issues
are common subjects in her work. A combination of sensuous oils and a
variety of mediums create textures that produce powerful paintings with
resonate depth, imbued with light and potency. The painting ’Beefore
the End’, was exhibited at the 2019 London Art Biennale. The top of the
work conveys life, bees, a beehive, blossom, pollen and water. Moving
down, a human figure starts to weaken, life is deteriorating, bits of
paint are flaking off, revealing the underneath surface, emphasizing that
everything is falling apart. The figure’s backside holds a secret message,
“If we cant be arsed taking massive action, expect to go down”. The
painting is crying because it is dying. The bees are falling to their death,
the leaves have dried, death and decay settles on the bottom.
