Karen Højsgård Nielsen is educated as a sculptor at The Royal
Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen 1982 - 88. She has
exhibited separately and with groups from 1980 : Drawings,
sculptures and installations. In 1993 she received the Danish
State Art Foundation´s 3 - year working grant, also a great
deal of smaller bursaries too. The titles of her exhibitions
gives a link to the working concept: transparent, being,
golden time, alchemy, test of paradise, deferred time ...

She works with inward pictures - which transform elements from the
everyday life as well as the metaphysics sphere to universal symbols
in a simple, poetic, philosophic and often subtle humoristic expression.
Like aphorism touches her work an archetypical mind by adding new
constellations with a twist of contemporary themes for instance : Hey
Monkey, DNA, Baby Detector, Thought Cleaner, Monotheism ...Well
known objects are assembled: A nap, a ruler, a wheel ... and in cases,
where the device and the idea can enrich each other, birth is given to
new associations. Often she uses classical methods: Modelling - and
later on casting in moulds. But she has too a great fascination of using
modern materials such as acrylic, silicone, latex ...and explores with
curiosity if this stuff - without a long historical frame of references - can
influence the world of ideas to be depict. The artist is searching for
some quintessence = a sorting out statements from the laboratory and
                                                              turn them to new adventures.
